I hope you have seen the segment from 60 Minutes which was actually aired almost six years ago. No one, myself included, can see the program without shedding a few tears at the end. The piece ends with a young lady who was a senior at Cristo Rey Jesuit High School that year getting a call from Xavier University in Cincinnati. The person calling informs her that she is receiving a number of scholarships to make her education there possible. (It really is a moving scene because they tell her she is going to receive a presidential scholarship, “or something like that,” as she says, from Xavier. It was all so new and unfamiliar to her that she wasn’t even sure what they were talking about! What people generally didn’t know is that this young lady only lasted a few months at Xavier. It was too hard to be away from her family so she decided to return home.
Last week I was walking to the garage on Michigan Avenue here in Chicago and all of a sudden someone said “Fr. Foley?” It was that same young lady. In that brief encounter she told me that she had indeed returned from Cincinnati in 2007 and enrolled in Roosevelt College here in Chicago. She said she has just graduated from the University of Illinois in Chicago and that she is now applying for law school. You can guess how happy that made all of us who know her.
